condon/rose residence, vancouver bc

The first and lowest area features a cut stone patio surrounded by an 18" wall topped with a cedar bench. This area is the closest to the house and acts as a formal patio for entertaining guests. At the corner of this patio we planted three trees: A Japanese Snowbell, a Red Leafed Norway Maple, and a Scots Pine. These trees will provide privacy from the neighbours, and create a much-needed canopy of shade for the patio and the house during summer.

The second, and highest area is a quiet, meditative alcove with a grassy floor. We marked this area with a purple-leaved Japanese Maple at the entrance, and a Witch Hazel and Burning Bush at the exit. It also features a pink flowering Magnolia.

The third space is also grassy, with enough room to play a game of catch, or just lay out for an afternoon nap. It is the shadiest corner of the yard, and features a simple arbour from which the owners hang their swinging wicker seats. We planted a young climbing Hydrangea vine on the arbour which, as it grows, will add further privacy to this corner. This area is also home to a vegetable garden where the homeowners plan to grow raspberries, tomatoes and a few other vegetables.
